Haley Clark: Still in development

It can be troublesome when one has an idea but no clue which direction to take it. Such is the case with this series I'm still trying to develop. I'll probably have a better feel for this once I actually write one or two stories (I hope). Let me know what you think.

Haley Clark is fresh out of college with a Bachelor's in Witchcraft, and as such is completely unemployable. Despite being very prolific in her field, there just isn't much practical use for her skills in an evermore technological world. Most people in the world tend to be ignorant about the disposition of magic users beyond the usual "cackling, cauldrons and broomsticks" stereotypes, which really doesn't help matters one bit.

Haley Clark is a highly optimistic young woman thrust into the real world with the totally unmarketable skill of witchcraft. Many people tend to mistake her naivete for stupidity, but she is simply ignorant of goings on that are outside her personal train of thought. (She can't name her city's mayor, but golly, if you want to convert dark chocolate into white chocolate with the flick of a wrist, she's your lady!) Her preferred mode of transportation is her handcrafted broomstick and instead of a purse she pulls most anything she has/needs out of her Pocketbook Dimension (a little portal where she keeps her stuff that can be opened anywhere).

Elijah Palam has been Haley's boyfriend since high school. His B.A. in English is equally (if not more so) useless when it comes to being employed. Unlike Haley, he has come to terms with this and has settled into a tolerable rut at his job at the local Buzz Barn coffee house. While not sharing his girlfriend's optimism, he has come to rely on hers to keep himself smiling. Since the two live together in a relatively tiny apartment, he's a frequent penny-pincher and tends to nag Haley about getting a job.

Twinkle is Haley's cat, more of a close friend and confidant than she is a pet. Only Haley can understand her Meowlish language. (Magic! Remember?) Although she was the one raised since kittenhood, she tends to be the more motherly one, fretting about Haley's safety and always willing to give advice (as much as a cat's understanding of the human world will warrant). Despite being a complete wimp when things get tough, she'll always stay by her human friend's side.

Huan-Chen Ng is still in school and is the daughter of Haley's Eastern Magics professor. While she is majoring in Witchcraft and is quite talented at it, it is not what she wishes to pursue for a career. Pressure from her family history of sorcerers and sorceresses (especially from her aforementioned Professor Mom) has forced her down this path despite her passion for the arts. Haley considers her a friend and this utterly confuses Huan, as she was never particularly friendly towards her. Haley's frequent upbeat attitude grates against Huan constantly, making it hard at times to keep her own short fuse in check.

There are still minor characters to flesh out and stories to further outline, but that should give you the gist of it. Please leave any comments with suggestions and criticisms. Feel free to hate it even, as long as it's constructive hate.

Seems like it has a pretty strong base. Lots of characters. I don't really know what to say. I can't find anything against it, but I'd have to see it before I could say whether I like it or not.

Great ideas so far. Would this be a half-hour type show? or 15-minute? or even shorter?
I love the fact that the English major can't get a job in his field, and I'm curious to see how Haley Clark and Elijah Palam will conflict and inspire each other.
Something I am a little worried about however is the similarities between this and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I mean, I don't know too much about that series, but it could be an obvious problem with the production.
Can't wait to see more updates!

Couple of questions:

1 - is the boyfriend character oblivious to Haley being a witch?

2 - when this series gets moving, will the cat be seen to be talking or will it only mew and have Haley translate?

3 - do you think that this kind of character would work? Someone who knows Haley is a witch and very naive and plans on attempting to exploit this for his own nefarious reasons, only to fail dismally all the time.

Look forward to seeing it come together.

Well I must say. I've been watching your stuff for quite some time, in a non inspirational way I'm afraid as we are jacks of different trades. But I really enjoyed reading about this cast of your.

Keep this sizzle up.
oh, and happy pancake Tuesday. My girlfriend just whipped a pancake with the texture and taste of dough nuts ... but it's still a pancake. I blew my mind.

boss - I'm hoping a half-hour series as this will have way more character depth than "Evil Josh". I sure hope it isn't anything like "Sabrina", as that show suhhhhcked.

backflipboy - 1. No, Elijah knows. Actual magic is as standard in this world as arts and crafts or baking is in our world.
2. As it is in my mind right now, we'll be able to hear the cat talk but only from Haley's point of view.
3. I'm trying more for a "slice of life" with a magical twist rather than a "hero vs. villain" sort of thing. However, since there are manipulative people like that in the real world, I don't see why it wouldn't be out of the question.

So far, we know lots about the characters' personal situations and little about their personalities. The taste of Haley's in her description sounds interesting and I want to know more. This being a slice-of-an-unusual-life concept, that's more important than anything. I'd love to see you make some posts breaking down their personalities.

It sounds good enough as a concept, and there probably is room for a show like this on TV. Reminds me of Sabrina, which could be used as reference perhaps in regards to episode ideas? Both for use in your own work as well as to know if you are doing something unoriginal.

The characters themselves seem very entertaining :D They are very international in terms of race, which i enjoy ^^

I could really see myself watching this show, especially if it has the same feel as your other cartoons such as Evil Josh and Billy as well as your other animated pieces. I'm not sure if you want it to be animated traditionally or in flash. Either way works fine i think.

Best of luck with pitching the series :D

Hi. I found your blog on google. My name's Haley Clark. I give you a thumbs up on this. It made me laugh. And it's really cool cause you're not too off base with my life. I'm a pagan. I have dated a black guy who now works in a coffee internet cafe. Kinda creepy. I had a cat named Magick that kinda looks like twinkle, too. And as for the asian girl... I have an asian friend who likes to grope me in public at very inappropriate times...does that parallel at all? Well, it was an interesting find, anyway.

Just thought you might find this as funny as I did. Much love.
